55 ALIVE/MATURE DRIVER
REFRESHER COURSE.
This
is an innovative classroom, driver-retraining program, designed specifically to
help older drivers improve their driving skills. It takes into consideration
the physical changes of the maturing driver, and identifies ways in which
he/she can compensate for these changes.
The
course will remind participants of driving skills and techniques they once
learned, but fail to use regularly. The course provides new approaches and
concepts, including compensating for normal age related physical changes that
may affect driving ability.
Research
indicates that older drivers are involved in more collisions than their younger
counterparts, when the records are based on actual kilometers driven.
Due
primarily to the physical changes of aging, many senior drivers have increasing
difficulty with yielding the right-of-way, backing, turning, lane changing, and
entering and exiting freeways.
Road
safety experts, and medical authorities agree that almost everyone begins to
experience some marked physical changes around age 55, and these changes have
an effect on the way they drive.
However,
research also indicates that people can improve their driving abilities
through additional training, attention, and practice, enabling them to maintain
their driving privilege, while driving more defensively.
The
course is a classroom oriented course of 10 hours duration, divided into 4
sessions of 2 ½ hours each, over 4 days. The program is presented using a
combination of workbooks, overheads, brochures, and group discussions.
IN-CAR
EVALUATIONS ARE ALSO OFFERED AND RECOMMENDED AS AN EXTRA.
